چکیده

This paper analyzes the relationship between individuals' attitudes towards risk and their decision to migrate. We consider migration in United States across metropolitan statistical areas (MSAs) 1997 2015, based on data from Panel Study of Income Dynamics (PSID). Using random-effects specifications, we find that being relatively more willing take risks is positively significantly related cross-MSA migration. For cross-state larger distances, are slightly important. A recursive bivariate probit model simultaneous equations addresses potential endogenous nature allows ruling out reverse causality.

Risk Attitudes and Migration Experience

Although risk and uncertainty are intrinsic to human migration, there is surprisingly little explicit research on the willingness to take risks in this context. This paper analyses whether migrants are more or less likely than non-migrants to be risk tolerant, and whether these differences are gendered. Attitudes are explored in terms of responses under conditions of both risk and uncertainty, ...

Higher Order Risk Attitudes, Demographics, and Financial Decisions

We study the prevalence of the higher order risk attitudes of prudence and temperance, in a large demographically representative sample, as well as in a sample of undergraduate students. Participants make pairwise choices between lotteries of the form proposed by Eeckhoudt and Schlesinger (2006). The choices in these lotteries isolate prudent from imprudent, and temperate from intemperate, beha...

Migration Decisions , Remittances , and Altruism

It is understandable that remittances are larger if the migrant is more altruistic. However, remittances that the household expects to receive, i.e. expected remittances, depend not only on remittances by the migrant, who has already moved to the host county, but also on how likely it is that a household member, a potential migrant, actually migrates. Such a probability can also be affected by ...

Modeling Individual Migration Decisions

We summarize recent research that formulates life cycle models of migration which are estimated using longitudinal data. These models consider multiple destinations and multiple periods. The framework offers a unified view applicable to internal and international migration flows, however data limitations severely hinder studies of international migration. As is common in modeling life cycle dec...
